Insurance Agents Need to Take Care of Their Google Profile - Here's How (Google My Business)

“Google it” has been synonymous with searching for information for over a decade now, even becoming an officially defined transitive verb in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary in 2006. You can look up nearly anything through this powerful web-based search tool, so why not take advantage of the tools they offer for businesses like yours?

If you don’t know, Google My Business (GMB) lets you freely promote your business website and the Google Profile you create in Google Search and Maps, making it easier for prospective clients to find you. The Internet is so focused on maximizing SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and your Google My Business profile allows you to tap into that streamlined search process.

Generally, if someone is looking up information on businesses like yours, they’ve decided to commit to the service. One way or another, people will find some kind of information on you and your business, so it behooves you to curate the information you want them to find as opposed to suppositions born of misinformation.

Make a Google Profile

If you don’t already have one, we recommend you sign up for a Google account. It’s free and straightforward.

Then you register your business name at business.google.com by selecting “Add your business to Google” on the site. After working through some quick information input, all you need is to verify your business. Once done, you can fill out more information on your business to optimize your GMB listing in searches. Get as much information and photos in there as you can manage, make sure you’re thorough, and then double-check the work, so it’s right the first time through.

Picture of a Perfect Business

As the adage goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” so adding clear, professional imagery to your profile attracts eyes. People like to be dazzled, and photos of your business make it tangible, adds credibility, and show you put thought and effort into your work. Most smartphones have excellent cameras these days, so make time for your own photoshoot, or even hire a professional if you prefer. Don’t be afraid to look at the images other businesses with high ratings use and adapt and emulate shots for your purposes. It is an easy way to stand out. Just be sure to ask clients for permission before posting any images that include them!

The GMB App

Having the app handy means your clientele is never out of the loop. You can update any information (say, business hours in case of an emergency), post new pictures and updates, and respond to reviews. The app is available for iOS and Android, so don’t hesitate to download it once you’ve registered.

Engagement

One of the best ways to raise the profile of your business is to respond to customer reviews.

It is another simple, straightforward marketing tactic to retain current business and attract new clients. People are more likely to look into your business if they see you’re taking the time to respond to feedback and questions, positive and negative alike. Again, it’s that care and thoughtfulness that shows prospective clients that they matter because you take pride in the work you do. Try to encourage your clients to leave reviews to help you generate more business. So long as you’re amicable and ask after an excellent service experience, they’re more likely to help you out.

Keep People Up to Date

This goes hand-in-hand with engagement. GMB lets you post status updates, perhaps akin to Facebook. It can be a powerful marketing tool to leverage, allowing you to keep information current to folks making quick Google searches. Alert them to new products, industry trends, carrier discounts, and other events relevant to your business. It keeps your listing fresh and continues to build credibility and trust for visitors. Just ensure that whatever information you update, it’s consistent with your website and other digital spaces.

With such a powerful marketing tool available for free, it makes no sense to ignore GMB. An agent can generate interest and traffic for their business with maybe a few hour’s work, depending on how fancy you want to get with the content. Just remember: every minute invested in curating your business’ image is an investment in your business. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain with this service.
