Is insurance sales a good career?

Insurance sales is a promising, long-lasting career. Here's what you should consider before deciding on this career for you.

Job stability and growth

One of the best things about insurance sales is the job's sustainability. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the field to grow 6% from 2021 to 2031. This translates to 52,700 jobs on average each year. This is also an incredibly stable career. Everyone needs insurance, so insurance-related careers aren't going anywhere soon.

Low entry barriers

Another massive positive of Insurance sales is that you don't need a degree. Some firms may prefer that you have one but this is a great career to get into if you don't have a degree. You can make a very successful career without a college degree in insurance sales. In fact, US News ranks the field as #11 in best jobs without a degree and #14 in the highest paying jobs without a degree.

Flexible schedule

Insurance sales is a commission-based job, which can be positive or negative. On the positive side, you can make your schedule and work partially from home. You can make a schedule around your family's schedule to find what works best for you.

Commissions

Your pay can be commission based. You may be an independent contractor or self-employed, which means you don't qualify for a base salary. You can also be an employee, which means you get a base salary, but your income is supplemented with commissions.

Insurance can be an extremely lucrative career if you are a good salesperson and willing to work hard. If you’re more of an introvert, this could be a difficult - but definitely not impossible - career.  This is a personal preference, so think about what works best for you.

Customer service

While this may not feel like it's in the same realm, customer service is a big part of selling insurance. Again, this could be positive or negative, depending on your preference.

Understanding your customers and predicting how their business will grow are skills you will hone as an insurance agent. Experience working in customer service is a positive asset to this career; the better you are at it, the more money you can earn. Again, assess your preference and skills at customer service work before getting into this field.
